In the early 1900s, in a small Midwestern village, local townsfolk were terrorized by uncontrolled violence. A set of unusual circumstances brought Charlie Witwer and his three brothers to the village to make the streets safe. The Witwer Files is a story inspired by actual events and tells how the lives of those involved were forever changed by the events that took place in two short years. It takes the reader through the struggles of the Witwer family to make a new life in a community divided against itself by an event that almost destroyed the lives of three generationsa trial for murder!

This book arrived on time and in the condition advertised. The reason I wanted to read this book as well as to add it to my private library, is because it tells of a time back when this little rural village was thriving, or as thriving as one of the tens of thousands of little railroad siding towns that popped up
all over this country when it was trying so hard to grow up, and with visions of becoming a big city in the Midwest. And of course, I'm very familiar with what it is today, living just fifteen miles from it now.
The draw to these little villages was the railroad which gave them a fairly local place for agricultural, or mining goods to be transported to the big markets. Hence these little villages sprang up all over America in the early years of becoming a prosperous industrial, and agricultural country that shipped it's raw and refined goods from the heartland of America to all points of the globe.
Here we have the village of "Walkerville", and "Hillveiw" (just a tad further down the road from Hillveiw). Two towns of a church and one room school house, false store fronts, saloons, a dry good store, stable and 'Smitty', and maybe a large two story house with rooms to rent .... the prehistoric beginnings of todays 'Bed & Breakfast', and of course, the depot. "Back in the day" they had shoot-outs in the dirt roads right in downtown Walkerville & Hillview and on the other side, a tremendous civic responsibility, church socials and picnics, barn raisings, building the one room schoolhouse .... whatever it took for the community to grow.
And then economical changes came with the automobile, trucks, rock roads then paved, and the railroads gave way to bigger and bigger trucks that could pick up the goods right on the farm, mine or quarry. The railroads soon began passing up the sidings to pick up the raw goods .... then no train stopped there anymore at all .... and these little villages dried up. Now there may be a handful of families that live in these little villages, but they all have to drive into the larger towns to do there business, while school busses pick their kids up and take them to a central school somewhere in the county.
Mostly though, the drug culture has moved into these small out of the way places because they are, 'Out of the way' ... housing is cheap, no prying eyes, no local police ... they can do their own thing in private.
In the name of progress .....
Yes, it was a very good read, for me.

Very enjoyable book..especially if you happen to know this area.
Arrived quickly. Quick read.
Good flow, book is broken in to very short chapters, was easy to stop and start and not lose my place since I have young kids. Interesting local history
Okay, but a bit dry.
Great local history
Distant relatives and never had heard this story before. Found it very interesting and good reading. Job well done. Thank you
I'm thankful for this book. I had just recently learned that Charles Witwer is my great-grandfather. This story's setting was well described and I believe there is a road in Scott County named Witwer Rd. Goldie is my grandmother and I would love to meet the author and go see all the places mentioned in this story. What a strange coincidence is that I currently live in Callaway County Missouri near where he was born. Wonderful read! Thanks D.L. Dennis.
