Cai, who’s been in dark sleep since his enemies buried him a few centuries ago, emerges into a brand new world. His rescuer is a beautiful human woman who becomes his only link to understanding this city of metal and concrete, with its rules to keep vampires in check. No more hunting vamps to the death—now vampires are regulated, restricted, all but muzzled.
Mariah seems to understand his distance from the world, because she experiences the same disconnection. Cai hopes to make her his own, but he soon learns that touching her will hurt her more than he can stand. Cai has already lost everyone dear to him and refuses to lose her as well. But when danger comes, the only choices he can make are heartbreaking ones.

Jennifer Ashley has written some of my very favorite women's fiction, for example the superb The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie and a number of others. However, some of her other books are nowhere near that level of craft and emotional power. This novella is firmly in the latter category.(Some SPOILERS) The h and H lust for each other instantly -- given a boost by the fact that he's naked for the first part of the book -- save each others' lives, she sacrifices her telepathic gift to save him, they declare their love, and that's it. He is ancient, immensely powerful and immortal, she is a youngish human woman. No idea what will happen now that she has lost her gift, where they will go, how they will live, anything substantive at all. I found it shallow and frustrating. I wonder if the truly excellent works from this author were actually written by the same person who wrote this one and the other non-A-Level works under her name. In any case, I recommend giving this one a miss.

I as always enjoy another Immortal book. But this one ended abruptly.I wished it was longer, but I still enjoyed it.
just not long enough. needed a few more chapters. did they find someone to break the curse. did she get her telepathy bavk?
What is not to like 1. It's Jennifer Ashley 2. It's a to die for (or should I say be immortal for) vampire. 3.Always a good story line.
This story was tooo short! I enjoyed it a lot but wished there was more to it. I don't know if there will be a sequel to it or not but I sure hope so. This is an excellent author and I will be looking for more of her books!
Loved it! it was so exciting and you couldn't help but fall in love with the vamp! I loved all of these books and hope some new ones are coming out soon! Jennifer is one of the best authors and makes her books so exciting! love the happy endings!
I loved meeting Mariah and Cai, and their adventures were intense, but I would really love *more*...this is an intriguing couple, and I'd love to read more about what happens next. I *really* hope that this author continues this series in some way!!
